Kim Kardashian as Marilyn Monroe at the Met Gala

As the first Monday of May came upon us, the Met Gala was here. Every year A-listers come in their best outfit to show support for the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Kim Kardashian is one of the most well known celebrities of our generation and is a staple of the fashion world. Anything she wears is a moment of fashion history and gets talked about for weeks. In previous Met Galas Kim wore Givenchy in 2013, Lanvin in 2014, Roberto Cavalli in 2015, Balmain in 2016, Vivienne Westwood in 2017, Versace in 2018, Mugler in 2019, and for her last met gala before this year, she wore Balenciaga.

For this years Met, Kim made the bold decision of wearing Marilyn Monroe’s iconic “Happy Birthday Mr. President” dress from 1962. In this dress, Marilyn Monroe sung happy birthday to President Kennedy. This dress is a historic artifact and was quite the controversy.

The actual dress was Jean-Louis, Vogue describes the gown as a “sparkling translucent look embellished with over six thousand crystals”. Kimberly went on to say, “In a sense, it’s the original naked dress. That’s why it was so shocking.”. The controversy grew as Kim’s Behind the Scenes video came out, she went on to reveal her secrets into fitting in the dress. “I would wear a sauna suit twice a day, run on the treadmill, completely cut out all sugar and all carbs, and just eat the cleanest veggies and protein. I didn’t starve myself, but I was so strict.” she tells Vogue. The moment took the media by storm with Riverdale star Lili Reinhart going on to Instagram to speak her mind on the matter – “So wrong. So ****** on 100s of levels.“.  Kim has a history with the body positivity movement including her shapewear brand SKIMS describing themselves as “a solutions-oriented brand creating the next generation of underwear, loungewear and shapewear”. As this is what Kim represents herself as, fans were not too happy to hear about the promotion of unhealthy eating habits “all for a dress.”

My personal opinion? The dress is historic and was not meant to be worn by anyone other than Monroe herself – but do I think it is as big of a deal as people are making it? No. It’s one of the most iconic dresses in the world, but at the end of the day it is just a dress. A very beautiful, timeless, iconic dress. Kim looked fabulous and I think she executed the look well.
