Virtual Band ‘Gorillaz’ Under Fire For The Planned Usage of NFT’s

When Did This Happen?

On March 26th of 2021, Gorillaz made several announcements on a news website called “” , most of which were centered around the fact that March 26th was the 20th anniversary of the Bands Self Titled album called “Gorillaz”. Among these announcements, they stated that they will be collaborating with the vinyl toy company ‘Superplastic’ to create NFT art collectibles.

Why Is This Bad?

For those who are unaware, NFT (or nonfungible token) are digital files underpinned by blockchain tech, which is the exact same tech that is used in a lot of well-known cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum. However, there’s something that makes NFT unique from other cryptocurrencies, and that is the blockchain ledger that it relies on, verifies who the true owner of something is. This means that nearly anything digital can have this put on it, to prevent online theft.

However, NFT has been confirmed to have a serious threat to the environment. This threat being, the amount of electricity that NFTs use, which according to, is around the amount that the average U.S. household uses in a day. This is due to the underlying blockchain system of NFTs.

What Was The Reaction From Fans?

As one could predict, many people were not happy about this choice, and fans were quick to point out how hypocritical this was when put into context of the band’s music discography, and one of the creators of Gorillaz Damon Albarn, who is a supporter of the environment, and believes it should be taken care of with great effort. When one puts into context Gorillaz discography, it becomes immediately noticeable that many of the band’s songs criticize various aspects of how we humans treat the environment, and how we should take great care of it, and its because of this, that many fans are incredibly mad over this new announcement.
