Hylton Cheer Wins State Championship

The 2017 Hylton Varsity Cheerleaders are All County Champions, Cardinal District Champions, Occoquan Region Champion and Class 6 State Champions!

This year has been a season for the books for the Hylton Varsity Cheer team with an undefeated season topped off by a State Championship Title. The 2017 Hylton Varsity Cheerleaders are All County Champions, Cardinal  District Champions, Occoquan Region Champions and Class 6 State Champions.

After placing second at states last year, the Bulldogs knew they had to bring the heat and walk away with the title this year. The team’s rival Grassfield was the team to beat; Grassfield won the title in 2014, 2015 and 2016. Last year, Grassfield beat the Hylton Bulldogs by just a point and a half.

After completing the first round at States, Hylton scored lower than they desired and was initially in 3rd place in the competition. The team knew they had to step it up in the next round in order to win. Before going back out for round two, Coach Shawnice Wright told the team that as the only undefeated team competing, they were “the team to beat.” Additionally, Mrs. Betsy Campagna went to the team with her ring from her own 1998 Hylton Cheer State Championship, which was the last time Hylton won the title. Campagna told the team it was their time to win. Stephen Goytia, a senior on the team, said that the pep talks helped the team to “pull it all together” before going back out on the mat.

The Bulldog’s routine for the second round was exactly what they needed. Hylton cheerleaders were able to perform their routine without any slips, bumps or falls. They delivered a seemingly perfect routine. The team finished with a score of 269 out of 300. When Coach Wright received the score, she knew it was a win for the team since it was one of the highest Virginia High School League (VHSL) Cheer scores in history.

The team’s hard work throughout the whole season paid off, and as Lauren Green said, “All we were focused on is the ring.” The team had a central goal of winning, and when they did, it became the highlight of their overall successful season.
